Valley Girl – Signs of spring… in January?

The sunshine has me dreaming of my garden and starting to plan a vegetable plot (my new year’s resolution).

I’m thinking about constructing two large, knee-high containers, as opposed to simply rototilling a large patch in the middle of the lawn. I want to get it done in time to plant spinach in early spring. If I could get my act together, the forecast seems perfect for a little garden construction!

If you’re a weather buff, the Environment Canada website provides interesting statistics on past weather. Simply visit the page for the 7-day forecast and click on the Record Values link at the bottom right.

It will tell you that today’s average high is 6 degrees. The highest temperature on record for Jan. 15 was 12.8 degrees in 1974, and the lowest temperature was -14.4 in 1937.

In 1961, there was 61 cm of snow on the ground at the airport today! Seems like I should take advantage of this weather while it lasts.

I’ve decided to collect my personal musings under the title Valley Girl. If you’re more of a news hound, you may want to steer clear! The title before a post’s headline (ie. News, Farm photo of the week, Review, What’s in season now?) should help you find what you’re looking for on this site.

Daffodils!

Daffodils!
